MFT-Specific Hours Are No Longer Required
Starting with the renewal cycle that began October 1, 2026 (the 2026-2028 cycle), Utah no longer requires LMFTs or AMFTs to complete MFT-specific continuing education. That includes the 15 MFT-specific hours and the 3 MFT-specific Ethics/Law/Tech hours.
What the previous rule required
Under the previous version of Utah's Mental Health Professional Practice Act Rule (R156-60, last changed May 1, 2023), section R156-60-105(1)(c) required marriage and family therapists to complete continuing education directly related to marriage and family therapy:
- at least 15 of the 40 hours
- at least 3 of the 6 hours in ethics, law or technology
Those hours were part of the regular 40 hours, not extra hours on top.
What the current rule requires
The current rule, R156-60e-402.1, sets one continuing education requirement for every mental health license. For a master's degree or higher, that's 40 hours every two-year cycle, including:
- 6 hours of professional ethics, law or ethics of technology
- 2 hours of suicide prevention
There is no longer a separate MFT-specific requirement.

What this means in the app
- 2024-2026 cycle: the MFT-specific bars and the MFT switch on the Add Training form still work, because that cycle followed the previous rule.
- 2026-2028 and later: the MFT rows are grayed out and marked "Not required." MFT trainings still count toward your total, live and Ethics/Law/Tech hours like any other training.
